XMLHttpRequest only allowed network requests to external resources (to prevent calling WebTiles APIs). I was a bit hesistant whether to add network requests at all, but I felt like leaked IPs were worth the added functionality (people actually created a social media from this after). And requests would only go off when you click on the tile, so it'd be pretty much like visiting a website.
